Braces and Orthodontics
Braces and orthodontic treatment are used to correct “bad bites,” or malocclusion (teeth that are crowded, crooked, or do not function properly). In some cases, your teeth may be straight, but your upper and lower jaws may not meet correctly in place. Tooth or jaw alignment problems may be hereditary or could result from a possible injury, early/late tooth loss, or thumb-sucking.
It’s best to bring your child to an orthodontist by the time they turn 7. The dentist will examine to see if orthodontic treatment is necessary and will determine the best time for your child to be treated. The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by that time and crowding, cross-bites, and other problems can be further evaluated.
When treatment is started at an early age, the orthodontist can guide the growth of the jaw and guide incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also gain space for permanent teeth, help reduce the need for extractions of permanent teeth, reduce the possibility of impacted permanent teeth, eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems, regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches. Treatment that begins while a child is growing helps produce optimal results.
