Silver Fillings vs. White Fillings
Silver fillings, which are also known as amalgams, are made of a combination of metals such as silver, tin, and mercury. Copper can also be thrown into the mix. White fillings, also known as composite fillings, are made of plastic and ceramic.
Both options can be used to fill cavities, but unlike amalgam fillings which are typically reserved for larger treatment areas, tooth-colored composite fillings can be used to successfully treat even the smallest of cavities.
Filling Treatment Process
Kids First Dental will start by using a local anesthetic in order to numb the area around the tooth that needs to be filled. We will then remove the decay, clean the area, and then proceed to fill the tooth with the chosen material. Once this is done, the tooth will be polished for better esthetics and comfort.
Are there advantages to white fillings?
If you have a cavity in a tooth that can easily be seen when you smile, eat, or talk, a white filling will definitely have the advantage.
Composite fillings adhere to the tooth with a clear bonding material. And since composite fillings closely mimic the color of natural teeth, it’s not obvious to others that you have a filling.
